One of the main reasons why people don’t eat more fruit such as mangoes, is they can’t get them to ripen at exactly the right time. They don’t know how to ripen a mango or slow down the ripening process properly.
When you’re new to eating mangoes, it’s hard to tell how long it’s going to take for them to ripen. So when you buy your mangoes, get them home, there’s nothing worse than having to wait a week for them to ripen.
And even worse than that, all your mangoes ripen at once and you can’t eat them all quickly enough, so you end up throwing them away. What a waste!
I want to help you get your mangoes ripe at exactly the right time by showing you how to speed up the mango ripening process. And I’m going to show you how to avoid your mangoes going bad before you’ve eaten them by showing down the mango ripening process.
This short video will help you to eat more perfectly ripe mangoes and avoid throwing them away…
How To Ripen A Mango Faster (Or More Slowly)
Today I’m going to be telling you how to ripen a mango faster and also how to slow down the ripening process.
So let’s go and do some magic with fruit.
How To Ripen A Mango Faster
1: Put the mangoes in the warmest place in the house
Firstly, you can put them in a warmer place in your house, like on top of your fridge.
I usually put them in my office because that’s the warmest place in my house and they ripen a lot quicker in there.
2: Leave them in the sunshine
3: Leave them on a window ledge
You can put them on a window shelf where they’ll get more sun.
4: Put them in a paper or plastic bag
Another trick you can use is you can put them inside a brown paper bag or a plastic bag and that will ripen them up more quickly.
5: Leave the bag outside in the sun covered with a towel
Put the mangoes in a bag and keep it outside in the sun and cover with a towel. This will speed up the ripening process even further.
*Note:
Warm environments will speed up the ripening a bit more. But it does depend on whether you’ve got sunny weather or whether you can create a warm environment in your house.
But still, it also does depends somewhat on how unripe they were when they were picked as to how quickly they will ripen. Some of them just won’t ripen, no matter what you do!
6: Place an apple or banana in the same bag
Finally to speed up the ripening, you can place an apple or banana inside a bag along with the mangoes.
This will release gasses which help the unripe fruit to ripen as quickly as the ripe fruit.
*Note: when ripening, keep checking on the mangoes daily to make sure that condensation doesn’t destroy the mangoes.
How stop or slow down the ripening process?
Another question I get asked is how to stop mangoes from ripening any further or how to slow down the ripening process.
Suppose your mangoes have gotten ripe. But you decide that you don’t want to eat it straight away… Or you want to eat it in a day or two, or you bought too many mangoes and you’re not going to be able to get through them all, or are you are just too busy to chop them?
Then here is a trick that can come in handy for you:
Keep the mangoes in the fridge to keep them from going bad for up to a week!
I’ve had actually had these ripe mangoes (image below) in the fridge because I bought so many that I couldn’t get through them all.
And this method does keep them at the same kind of ripeness for a little while but not too long, probably not longer than a week. By then they’ll start to go a bit mushy and a bit brown.
